Today I am going to share a very simple recipe of chana dal tadka or chana dal curry, this kind of recipe is high in fibre, a rich source of protein and also a good option for people who are on a low carb or diabetic-friendly diet.

I still remember while travelling to Ranchi via Patna there are numerous line hotels and their chana dal tadka which is often known as tadka dal with fulka chapati is fabulous. They cook the lentils in an iron wok to make it little dark along with so many spices. I am glad to commemorate the aroma of it,  my father used to wakeup us during those days just to have a taste of such a delicious recipe.

I am not exactly sharing the same recipe, but today’s recipe is simple yet delicious, It carries the normal taste of tadka, but there are no hot spices. Later on, I will try to share those line hotel-style dal tadka, but today’s recipe is very simple and reminds my Monday meal of mother’s hand. Let’s learn step by step process to prepare this recipe.

  • ½ Cup Gram lentils (Overnight soaked )
  • 1 tsp Clarified butter
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 Piece Bay leaf
  • 1 tbsp Chopped garlic
  • 1 Piece Dried red chilli
  • ½ tbsp Chopped green chilli
  • 2 tbsp Chopped onion (1 small size onion chopped )
  • 2 tbsp Chopped tomato (1 small size tomato chopped )
  • 1 tsp Chopped coriander leaves
  • ¼ tsp Chopped ginger
  • ⅙ tsp Mango powder or tamarind (Optional )
  1. In a bowl take the gram lentils and soak it over night.



  2. Transfer it into a pressure cooker and add 2 cups of water, salt & turmeric powder and pressure cook it with 5 whistles.



  3. In a wok add clarified butter heat it, then add cumin seeds and bay leaf.



  4. Add dried red chilli, ginger, garlic, green chilli, onion & tomatoes into the wok and cook it.



  5. Add cooked lentils and cook along with the ingredients.



  6. Serve it.
