Sweet Appam | Unni appam | Sweet Kuzhi Paniyaram | Pua
Today I am going to prepare sweet appam using wheat flour, I know it seems similar to pua in Eastern parts of India, but in the south, this recipe is made using soaked rice, jaggery water, banana, cardamom powder with a punch of coconut.
This recipe is known by several names as we call it pua, in English it may be called as sweet appam, in Malayalam it is known as Unni appam and in Kerala, it is known as Sweet Kuzhi Paniyaram. Unniyappam is a small round snack made from rice, jaggery, banana, roasted coconut pieces, roasted sesame seeds and cardamom powder roasted in clarified butter as it is non fried so healthy as well. In the Malayalam language, ‘unni’ means small and ‘appam’ means rice cake so conglomerating them it becomes Unni appam.
As I am trying the same recipe with wheat flour hence for giving it the same texture with spongy and porous look and for its chewy flavour I have added chopped cashewnuts.
Let’s learn step by step process to prepare this recipe.
