                                                                        ॥ अथ वेदोक्तं रात्रिसूक्तम् ॥

ॐ रात्रीत्याद्यष्टर्चस्य सूक्तस्यकुशिकः सौभरो रात्रिर्वा भारद्वाजो ऋषिः, रात्रिर्देवता,गायत्री छन्दः, देवीमाहात्म्यपाठे विनियोगः।

ॐ रात्री व्यख्यदायती पुरुत्रा देव्यक्षभिः। विश्‍वा अधि श्रियोऽधित॥1॥

ओर्वप्रा अमर्त्यानिवतो देव्युद्वतः। ज्योतिषा बाधते तमः॥2॥

निरु स्वसारमस्कृतोषसं देव्यायती। अपेदु हासते तमः॥3॥

सा नो अद्य यस्या वयं नि ते यामन्नविक्ष्महि। वृक्षे न वसतिं वयः॥4॥

नि ग्रामासो अविक्षत नि पद्वन्तो नि पक्षिणः। नि श्येनासश्चिदर्थिनः॥5॥

यावया वृक्यं वृकं यवय स्तेनमूर्म्ये। अथा नः सुतरा भव॥6॥

उप मा पेपिशत्तमः कृष्णं व्यक्तमस्थित। उष ऋणेव यातय॥7॥

उप ते गा इवाकरं वृणीष्व दुहितर्दिवः। रात्रि स्तोमं न जिग्युषे॥8॥

          ॥ इति ऋग्वेदोक्तं रात्रिसूक्तं समाप्तं। ॥

Meaning in English:

Om. O Divine Mother Ratri (Kaali), may you, who are the original primordial darkness, both the source and Final destination of all, omnipresent, controller of bondage and liberation alike, come forth to save us — may your presence, effulgent, right within us, be awakened now through spiritual realization. Auspicious protectress of all, you see and pervade your entire creation, reigning everywhere, over everything, in all your glory. 1

Eternal divine mother, you fill the vast celestial regions, and the earth. May you dispel all the ignorance of our embodied souls through your divine effulgence, the light of Truth. 2

Divine Mother, you alone can bring forth the dawn of the highest liberating knowledge to dispel all the darkness of our ignorance. 3

May you compassionately give us refuge from your own as‐if‐endless movements, bringing us home instead to rest in you, just as at nigh me, a bird re‐enters its nest upon a tree. 4

For all of humankind, for animals who traverse by foot, and for birds who fly in the air — even for the ambitious hawk — your rest, liberation, is the only true object, of our desperate search. 5

Drive away the she‐wolves of confusion and the he‐wolves of egotism, the thieves — hunger, thirst, delusion, grief, decay, and death. Then, certainly, we will cross safely, to the other side. 6

Divine Mother, do not subject us anymore to this dark ignorance that has enveloped us. Please forgive our many debts, and come to us now instead as the dawning light. 7

O Divine Mother Ratri (Kaali), expression of the heavens — you are the milk‐giving cow, the source of Illumination. Please accept this, our prayer to You — and grant us Victory! 8

Meaning in Hindi: 

महत्तत्त्वादिरूप व्यापक इन्द्रियों से सब देशों में समस्त वस्तुओं को प्रकाशित करने वाली ये रात्रिरूपा देवी अपने उत्पन्न किये हुए जगत के जीवों के शुभाशुभ कर्मों को विशेष रूप से देखती हैं और उनके अनुरूप फल की व्यवस्था करने के लिए समस्त विभूतियों को धारण करती हैं 1

ये देवी अमर हैं और सम्पूर्ण विश्व को नीचे फैलने वाली लता आदि को तथा ऊपर बढ़ने वाले वृक्षों को भी व्याप्त करके स्थित हैं; इतना ही नहीं, ये ज्ञानमयी ज्योति से जीवों के अज्ञानान्धकार का नाश कर देती हैं। 2

परा चिच्छक्तिरूपा रात्रिदेवी आकर अपनी बहिन ब्रह्मविद्यामयी उषादेवी को प्रकट करती हैं, जिससे अविद्यामय अन्धकार का नाश हो जाता है। 3

ये रात्रि देवी इस समय मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों, जिनके आने पर हम लोग अपने घरों में सुख से सोते हैं ठीक वैसे ही जैसे रात्रि के समय पक्षी वृक्षों पर बनाये हुए अपने घोंसलों में सुखपूर्वक शयन करते हैं। 4

उस करुणामयी रात्रि देवी के अंक में सम्पूर्ण ग्रामवासी मनुष्य, पैरों से चलने वाले गाय, घोड़े आदि पशु, पंखों से उड़ने वाले पक्षी एवं पतंग आदि किसी प्रयोजन से यात्रा करने वाले पथिक और बाज आदि भी सुखपूर्वक सोते हैं। 5

हे रात्रिमयी चिच्छक्ति! तुम कृपा करके वासनामयी वृकी तथा पापमय वृक को हमसे अलग करो। काम आदि तस्कर समुदाय को दूर हटाओ। तदनन्तर हमारे लिए सुख पूर्वक तरने योग्य हो जाओ- मोक्षदायिनी एवं कल्याणकारिणी बन जाओ। 6

हे उषा! हे रात्रि की अधिष्ठात्री देवी! सब ओर फैला हुआ यह अज्ञानमय कला अन्धकार मेरे निकट आ पहुंचा है। तुम इसे ऋण की भाँति दूर करो जैसे धन देकर अपने भक्तों के ऋण दूर करती हो, उसी प्रकार ज्ञान देकर इस अज्ञान को भी मिटा दो| 7

हे रात्रिदेवी! तुम दूध देने वळील गौ के समान हो। मैं तुम्हारे समीप आकर स्तुति आदि से तुम्हें अपने अनुकूल करता हूँ। परम व्योमस्वरूप परमात्मा की पुत्री तुम्हारी कृपा से मैं काम आदि शत्रुओं को जीत चुका हूँ, तुम स्तोम की भाँती मेरे इस हविष्य को भी ग्रहण करो।8

Ratri Suktam, a Rig Vedic hymn, also finds a place in the sacred text Devi Mahatmiyam, and this is generally known as the Tantric Ratri Suktam. Devotees who perform Vedic rituals generally recite the Vedic Ratri Suktam, while those who do the Tantric practices recite the Tantric Ratri Suktam.

‘Ratri Suktam’ also speaks about the greatness of Goddess Durga and hails her as omnipotent and omnipresence. This hymn glorifies her as the ultimate energy that permeates all the life forms on earth, provides purpose to existence, and is responsible for success in endeavors. She also remains the power behind the Mantras and can destroy all forms of negativities like diseases, enmities, and obstacles, and bestow prosperity, harmony, and happiness in life.

Sleeping in the night can be a powerful rejuvenating factor, and sleeplessness can be a curse that can cause immense harm to a person’s physical and mental health. It is believed that recitation of Ratri Suktam can balance the energy levels in the body, calm the mind, and make it attuned to faster and deeper sleep. Hence Ratri Suktam is also often used by people having sleep disorders to get over the problem. Many recite Ratri Suktam 2 or 3 times, before sleeping in the night, for undisturbed and sound sleep. Ratri Suktam is also chanted to access divine energy, tone up our own energy levels, and also enhance our mental powers.
