Damodarastakam

This Astakam describes Krishna’s early childhood pastime of running from His mother when she tried to punish Him for stealing butter from the gopis, the cowherd women of Vrindavan. For this special month of Karttika, devotees around the world sing these prayers every day. Each verse describes various exceptional qualities or features of Krishna. Sing along with the lyrics below, which include the English and Hindi translations. 

नमामीश्वरं सच्चिदानंदरूपं लसत्कुण्डलं गोकुले भ्राजमानं यशोदाभियोलूखलाद्धावमानं परामृष्टमत्यं ततो द्रुत्य गोप्या ॥ १॥

रुदन्तं मुहुर्नेत्रयुग्मं मृजन्तम् कराम्भोज-युग्मेन सातङ्क-नेत्रम् मुहुः श्वास-कम्प-त्रिरेखाङ्क-कण्ठ स्थित-ग्रैवं दामोदरं भक्ति-बद्धम् ॥ २

इतीदृक् स्वलीलाभिरानंद कुण्डे स्व-घोषं निमज्जन्तम् आख्यापयन्तम् तदीयेशितज्ञेषु भक्तिर्जितत्वम पुनः प्रेमतस्तं शतावृत्ति वन्दे ॥ ३॥

वरं देव! मोक्षं न मोक्षावधिं वा न चान्यं वृणेऽहं वरेशादपीह इदं ते वपुर्नाथ गोपाल बालं सदा मे मनस्याविरास्तां किमन्यैः ॥ ४॥

इदं ते मुखाम्भोजम् अत्यन्त-नीलैः वृतं कुन्तलैः स्निग्ध-रक्तैश्च गोप्या मुहुश्चुम्बितं बिम्बरक्ताधरं मे मनस्याविरास्तामलं लक्षलाभैः ॥ ५॥

नमो देव दामोदरानन्त विष्णो प्रसीद प्रभो दुःख-जालाब्धि-मग्नम् कृपा-दृष्टि-वृष्ट्याति-दीनं बतानु गृहाणेष मामज्ञमेध्यक्षिदृश्यः ॥ ६॥

कुबेरात्मजौ बद्ध-मूर्त्यैव यद्वत् त्वया मोचितौ भक्ति-भाजौ कृतौ च तथा प्रेम-भक्तिं स्वकां मे प्रयच्छ न मोक्षे ग्रहो मेऽस्ति दामोदरेह ॥ ७॥

नमस्तेऽस्तु दाम्ने स्फुरद्-दीप्ति-धाम्ने त्वदीयोदरायाथ विश्वस्य धाम्ने नमो राधिकायै त्वदीय-प्रियायै नमोऽनन्त-लीलाय देवाय तुभ्यम् ॥ ८॥

Meaning in English : 

To the supreme controller, who possesses an eternal form of blissful knowledge, whose glistening earrings swing to and fro, who manifested Himself in Gokula, who stole the butter that the gopis kept hanging from the rafters of their storerooms and who then quickly jumped up and ran in retreat in fear of Mother Yasoda but was ultimately caught – to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.

Upon seeing His mother’s whipping stick, He cried and rubbed His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes were fearful and His breathing quick, and as Mother Yasoda bound His belly with ropes, He shivered in fright and His pearl necklace shook. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.

Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krishna’s babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: “I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion.” To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times.

O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to You for liberation, nor eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon. My only prayer is that Your childhood pastimes may constantly appear in my mind. O Lord, I do not even want to know your feature of Paramatma. I simply wish that Your childhood pastimes may ever be enacted in my heart.

O Lord, the cheeks of Your blackish lotus face, which is encircled by locks of curling hair, have become reddened like bimba fruits due to Mother Yasoda’s kisses. What more can I describe than this? Millions of opulences are of no use to me, but may this vision constantly remain in my mind.

O unlimited Vishnu! O, master! O, Lord! Be pleased upon me! I am drowning in an ocean of sorrow and am almost like a dead man. Please shower the rain of mercy on me; uplift me and protect me with Your nectarean vision.

O Lord Damodara, in Your form as a baby Mother Yasoda bound You to a grinding stone with a rope for tying cows. You then freed the sons of Kuvera, Manigriva and Nalakuvara, who were cursed to stand as trees and You gave them the chance to become Your devotees. Please bless me in this same way. I have no desire for liberation into Your effulgence.

O Lord, the entire universe was created by Lord Brahma, who was born from Your abdomen, which was bound with a rope by Mother Yasoda. To this rope, I offer my humble obeisances. I offer my obeisances to Your most beloved Srimati Radharani and to Your unlimited pastimes.

Meaning in Hindi :

जिनके कपोलों पर दोदुल्यमान मकराकृत कुंडल क्रीड़ा कर रहे है, जो गोकुल नामक अप्राकृत चिन्मय धाम में परम शोभायमान है, जो दधिभाण्ड (दूध और दही से भरी मटकी) फोड़ने के कारण माँ यशोदा के भय से भीत होकर ओखल से कूदकर अत्यंत वेगसे दौड़ रहे है और जिन्हें माँ यशोदा ने उनसे भी अधिक वेगपूर्वक दौड़कर पकड़ लिया है ऐसे उन सच्चिदानंद स्वरुप, सर्वेश्वर श्री कृष्ण की मै वंदना करता हूँ ।

जननी के हाथ में छड़ी देखकर मार खानेके भय से डरकर जो रोते रोते बारम्बार अपनी दोनों आँखों को अपने हस्तकमल से मसल रहे हैं, जिनके दोनों नेत्र भय से अत्यंत विव्हल है, रोदन के आवेग से बारम्बार श्वास लेनेके कारण त्रिरेखायुक्त कंठ में पड़ी हुई मोतियों की माला आदि कंठभूषण कम्पित हो रहे है, और जिनका उदर (माँ यशोदा की वात्सल्य-भक्ति के द्वारा) रस्सी से बँधा हुआ है, उन सच्चिदानंद स्वरुप, सर्वेश्वर श्री कृष्ण की मै वंदना करता हूँ ।

जो इस प्रकार दामबन्धनादि-रूप बाल्य-लीलाओं के द्वारा गोकुलवासियों को आनंद-सरोवर में नित्यकाल सरावोर करते रहते हैं, और जो ऐश्वर्यपुर्ण ज्ञानी भक्तों के निकट “मैं अपने ऐश्वर्यहीन प्रेमी भक्तों द्वारा जीत लिया गया हूँ” – ऐसा भाव प्रकाश करते हैं, उन दामोदर श्रीकृष्ण की मैं प्रेमपूर्वक बारम्बार वंदना करता हूँ ।

हे देव, आप सब प्रकार के वर देने में पूर्ण समर्थ हैं। तो भी मै आपसे चतुर्थ पुरुषार्थरूप मोक्ष या मोक्ष की चरम सीमारूप श्री वैकुंठ आदि लोक भी नहीं चाहता और न मैं श्रवण और कीर्तन आदि नवधा भक्ति द्वारा प्राप्त किया जाने वाला कोई दूसरा वरदान ही आपसे माँगता हूँ। हे नाथ! मै तो आपसे इतनी ही कृपा की भीख माँगता हूँ कि आपका यह बालगोपालरूप मेरे हृदय में नित्यकाल विराजमान रहे। मुझे और दूसरे वरदान से कोई प्रयोजन नहीं है।

हे देव, अत्यंत श्यामलवर्ण और कुछ-कुछ लालिमा लिए हुए चिकने और घुंघराले लाल बालो से घिरा हुआ तथा माँ यशोदा के द्वारा बारम्बार चुम्बित आपका मुखकमल और पके हुए बिम्बफल की भाँति अरुण अधर-पल्लव मेरे हृदय में सर्वदा विराजमान रहे । मुझे लाखों प्रकार के दूसरे लाभों की आवश्यकता नहीं है।

हे देव! हे (भक्तवत्सल) दामोदर! हे (अचिन्त्य शक्तियुक्त) अनंत! हे (सर्वव्यापक) विष्णो! हे (मेरे ईश्वर) प्रभो! हे (परमस्वत्रन्त) ईश! मुझपर प्रसन्न होवे! मै दुःखसमूहरूप समुद्र में डूबा जा रहा हूँ। अतएव आप अपनी कृपादृष्टिरूप अमृतकी वर्षाकर मुझ अत्यंत दीन-हीन शरणागत पर अनुग्रह कीजिये एवं मेरे नेत्रों के सामने साक्षात् रूप से दर्शन दीजिये।

हे दामोदर! जिस प्रकार अपने दामोदर रूप से ओखल में बंधे रहकर भी (नलकुबेर और मणिग्रिव नामक) कुबेर के दोनों पुत्रों का (नारदजी के श्राप से प्राप्त) वृक्षयोनि से उद्धार कर उन्हें परम प्रयोजनरूप अपनी भक्ति भी प्रदान की थी, उसी प्रकार मुझे भी आप अपनी प्रेमभक्ति प्रदान कीजिये – यही मेरा एकमात्र आग्रह है। किसी भी अन्य प्रकार के मोक्ष के लिए मेरा तनिक भी आग्रह नहीं है ।

हे दामोदर! आपके उदर को बाँधनेवाली महान रज्जू (रस्सी) को प्रणाम है। निखिल ब्रह्मतेज के आश्रय और सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड के आधारस्वरूप आपके उदर को नमस्कार है। आपकी प्रियतमा श्रीराधारानी के चरणों में मेरा बारम्बार प्रणाम है और हे अनंत लीलाविलास करने वाले भगवन! मैं आपको भी सैकड़ो प्रणाम अर्पित करता हूँ।
