Rock garden Chandigarh has been a spot which attracted its visitors since its inception stage, this garden is well known eco-friendly garden, as the sculptures made from industrial and urban waste.
Chandigarh got world applause due to this unique idea. The credit of creation of this garden goes to Nek Chand, he used to work as a Road Inspector with the Public Works Department in the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Capital Project and spent almost 20 years to create this beautiful place.
He rambled the Shivalik Foothills and gathered stones resembling bird, animal, human and philosophical forms. He brought them on his bicycle. The first seven years (1958-65) were spent collecting natural material, urban and industrial waste. Gradually his collection mounted to an astounding twenty thousand rock forms of fascinating elegance.
Rock garden is spread in 40 acres, the layout of garden is based on the fantasy kingdom, which can be easily understood while visiting, it is said that initially it was not accepted by the authorities by open arms, but when tourists and people started appreciating his work then the government recognized his work and started providing salary and labour force to carry out that work more effectively.
The rock garden has 14 different chambers, forecourt consists of natural rock formations, royal poets and musician chambers complete with a pond and a hut, the main court consists of King’s thrones embellished with natural stone forms depicting Demi-Gods and Goddesses lining the place, a water pond like a swimming pool for the queen and her servants. Another phase of the garden consists of Palatial mansion, minars, waterfall, a village, mountain, an amphitheatre, canopy structure depicting royal amusement area. The greenery adds charm to the structure which is amazing and it correlates the flora and fauna.
This garden is worth visiting, one should visit this place for a mesmerizing experience.
