Sambhar Without Onion Garlic

As we know during festival season people avoid onion garlic, as it is considered tamasik (तामसिक) but eating only fruits can not fulfills the desire of certain cravings. So I tried preparing sambhar which can be served with Sama rice, idli, dosa etc. So instead of avoiding a list of food we can only change the ingredients just to make it compatible for festivals. Let’s learns step by step easy process for this recipe.

Sambhar Without Onion Garlic

  • 1/2 cup Tuvar (Toor) Pulses
  • 4 tbsp Chopped Bottle Gourd
  • 2 tbsp Sambhar Masala
  • 1 tsp Chopped Green chili
  • 2 tbsp Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp Mustard Oil
  • 1 tbsp Curry Leaves
  • 1 Piece Bay leaf
  • 1 tsp kasoori Methi (Dried Fenugreek Leaves)
  • 1 Piece Dried Red Chili
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Turmeric Powder
  1. In a pressure cooker add cumin seeds, bay leaf, curry leaf and dried red chili and let them emit smoke.
  2. Add oil and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped ingredients in the same pan and and cook them together.
  4. Soak toor dal and drain extra water, then take 2 tbsp of water in a bowl and mix sambar masala into it, along with salt and turmeric powder.
  5. Pour the mixture of spices in the cooker and add toor dal into it.
  6. Mix them well and stir fry for few minutes.
  7. Then add one and half cup of water, sprinkle kasoori methi and put the lid on.
  8. Pressure cook it with 4 whistle and your sambhar is ready to be served by sprinkling few leaves of coriander.
