Multipurpose Homemade Neem oil
Neem is referred to as “Sarva Roga Nivarini (सर्वा रोगा निवारिणी),” meaning “one that cures all ailments and ills.” I can not even count the innumerable benefits associated with it. Neem oil is basically extracted from the seeds of neem fruit but here I am going to extract it with its leaves, as at home it can be prepared without any effort following this method, and its benefit is similar to those extracted from the seeds.
Some of the beauty benefits associated with this plant are given below:
- Neem oil is natural anti-fungal which discards hair related problems like dryness, dandruff, head lice and their eggs without triggering any side effects. For using it in hair either one can apply it just by dabbing it on the fingertips and applying it from scalp to hair strands, and after 30 minutes wash it off. One can apply it mixing it with shampoo and applying it directly on the scalp and wash it off. It can also be applied as a hair spray by adding 1 tsp of neem oil in 10 tsp of water and just sprinkle it from scalp to hair strands. It can be applied as a hair pack also, for this add 1 tsp of neem oil in a bowl followed by any hair pack or simply take Multani mitti, sandalwood powder, Triphala or amla powder and add few drops of neem oil along with water to make a hair pack and apply it, after 30 minutes rinse it off.
- It treats dry skin, dullness, wrinkles and acne: Neem oil is filled with ingredients that benefit the skin, like vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which make it a great natural method to fight off dryness. Research shows it can help stimulate collagen production and improve elasticity, helping your skin stay youthful as you age. Its high vitamin E content also helps prevent free radicals from harming your skin. Because of neem oil’s antibacterial properties, it makes for great acne treatment. Not only can it help spot treat at the moment, but it’s also been shown to be successful at fighting it off in the long term. Also if one can put oil dabbed cotton directly in the navel to prevent facial infections..
- It Fights off foot fungus & Eczema: It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, which makes it a perfect choice for those prone to fungus infection in the foot, It helps kill the fungus. It also reduces Eczema, neem oil is an age-old natural remedy for eczema symptoms like itchy, dry skin. Though it soothes the skin, neem oil does not cure the root causes of eczema. These causes could be hereditary or acquired. Regular use of neem oil helps a great deal in treating eczema irritation and red rashes.
- Treats Psoriasis: Psoriasis is a painful skin disease which leaves your skin looking sunburnt. Dryness and scaling are the two leading symptoms associated with Psoriasis. Vitamin E rich Neem oil is incredibly helpful in soothing the itchiness and irritation caused by Psoriasis. Neem, with its antibacterial properties, prevents the development of any further skin infections and prevents irritation.
So, in short, we can say that Neem oil is very beneficial, be it skin, hair, chronic or viral diseases, stress, pet care, valuable agricultural pesticides or overall wellness.
Side Effects of Neem Oil
The appropriate dosage of neem is based on a person’s health, age and medical condition. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using neem oil, particularly in case of children and pregnant women. Though there are no proven side effects, it is always better to do a patch test before applying neem oil on face or body. Neem seed oil could be slightly toxic for fishes and underwater animals.
Diabetes: There is some evidence that neem can lower blood sugar levels and might cause blood sugar to go too low. If you have diabetes and use neem, monitor your blood sugar carefully. It might be necessary to change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Reduced ability to have children (infertility): There is some evidence that neem can harm sperm. It might also reduce fertility in other ways. If you are trying to have children, avoid using neem.
Organ transplant: There is a concern that neem might decrease the effectiveness of medications that are used to prevent organ rejection. Do not use neem if you have had an organ transplant.
Surgery: Neem might lower blood sugar levels. There is a concern that it might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop using neem at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Multipurpose Neem Oil
- 1 Cup Neem leaves (Neem powder if neem leaves are not available)
- 1 cup Coconut oil
Take fresh neem leaves and coconut oil.
Transfer the neem leaves into a grinding jar add few drops of water into it.
In a pan add 1 cup of coconut oil, if you want can use a double boiler.
Add grind ingredients.
Keep mixing it and cook it on the low flame.
When neem starts to change colour then switch off the flame and let it cool down.
As it becomes lukewarm then strain it.
Preserve it in different bottles for a different use, I have put the concentrate in one bottle, in another I have added water, few drops of oil in water to make plant spray, in the third bottle I have added fresh aloe vera gel, rose water, normal water, vitamin E capsule gel and few drops of neem oil to make hair serum.

Hello Shubhra, thanks for this wonderful writeup. I came across your article as I was trying to make a research on how to get rid of the acne on my face, I have been battling with it for a long time now. My Question is, with your recipe on how to prepare neem oil, how many times do you suggest I use it in a week?
If you are suffering from acne, try to apply this oil to the navel before bed, massage your face with this oil in a week or two, and then wash it with any herbal facewash. Do not apply moisturizer. Instead, apply aloe vera gel. Also, check your diet, eat more fruits and veggies, and drink lukewarm water in the morning.
My daughter is suffering from mitochondria disorder which makes her painfully tired. Do you think neem will help? Do you have any other things that will help?
Thank you for asking dear, and so sad to know about the suffering of your daughter, I wish she may get well soon from her sufferings. It’s better to ask your doctor regarding this, as this is ayurvedic treatment it will work but it will take long time. But it will heal for sure. take care dear.
