Oal Ka chokha | ओल का चोखा | Jimikand | Suran

Today I am going to share a very popular recipe of Oal choka, or bharta, which is basically mashed yam with spices, onion, green chillies, mustard oil, lemon etc. This recipe is very famous in Bihar, Bengal and Orissa. Oal/Suran/Elephant Yam/Jimikand is a vegetable-filled with protein, minerals and antioxidants, that are necessary for our body. It has a very low GI (Glycemic Index), making it safe for people having diabetes.

It is rich in Omega 3 fatty acid and thereby helps to reduce bad cholesterol. It also aids digestion and bowel movements and is also believed to have anti-ageing properties. This recipe of Oal ka chokha is a speciality dish from the State of Bihar. Serve Bihari Oal ka chokha as a side dish with your delicious lunch or dinner.

You can store it in the refrigerator and serve it every day with your meals. Adding lemon to the recipe is a must as without it it will cause an itchy sensation in the mouth which is due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. Let’s learn step by step process to prepare this recipe.

Oal Ka chokha | ओल का चोखा | Jimikand | Suran

  • 150 gm Oal/Suran/Elephant Yam/Jimikand
  • 1 tbsp Chopped Onion
  • 1 tsp Chopped Green chilli
  • 1 tsp Chopped coriander leaves
  • ½ tsp Celery seeds
  • ¾ tsp Onion seeds
  • ½ Slice Lemon
  • 1 tsp Salt (As per the taste )
  • 1 tbsp Mustard oil
  1. Take oal, wash it well, cut them into pieces and boil them.



  2. After boiling strain the water and remove its outer cover.



  3. Now transfer the pieces into a container.



  4. Add chopped onion, green chilli and chopped coriander leaves.



  5. Add lemon juice.



  6. Add celery seeds and onion seeds into it.



  7. Add salt as per the taste.



  8. Add mustard oil into it.



  9. Miax it with hand and the recipe is ready to be served.
